Airport history and Clark Air Base legacy {#history}

Clark International Airport — IATA CRK, ICAO RPLC — sits inside the former Clark Air Base in Mabalacat City and Angeles City, Pampanga. The base traces its history to 1903 as Fort Stotsenburg, was renamed Clark Field in 1919 after Major Harold Melville Clark (US Army Air Service pilot killed in 1919), and became Clark Air Base. From 1903 through 1991, Clark was the largest US military installation outside the continental United States, hosting the 13th Air Force and supporting US operations across the Pacific theater including World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War.

In June 1991, the eruption of nearby Mount Pinatubo — the second-largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century — buried Clark Air Base under volcanic ash. Combined with the Philippine Senate’s rejection of a new US Bases Agreement in September 1991, the US Air Force formally vacated Clark in November 1991.

The Philippine government, via the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) established in 1992, repurposed the area as the Clark Special Economic Zone (CSEZ).
